LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. It’s a type of light that is used to activate the teeth whitening agents. The solution is used with a mouth tray that fits over your front teeth. The LED light activates the whitening solution. There are two different whitening agents. Bleach-based solutions remove stains on and below your teeth’s surface. And non-bleach products work on surface stains only. The type of ingredients and their strengths vary among products. You can purchase these LED whitening systems at the store or your dentist's office for home use. You can also opt to have LED treatments applied by your dental professional. The treatment systems you get at or from your dentist's office are stronger. The system typically includes several vials of a whitening agent, applicators, mouth trays, and LED light for treatments over a period of days.
Is LED whitening safe? For the most part, it is considered safe. Sensitivity may occur with this type of teeth whitening. Sensitivity is related to the type of gel solution (bleaching agent), strength, and usage. When it comes to tooth sensitivity, everyone is unique in how they are affected, so it’s important to follow directions and only use them as instructed
It’s important to remember that LED whitening treatments are not teeth cleaning systems. Make sure to continue with your home oral care routine of brushing and flossing (also known as interdental cleaning) after meals and with your regular check-ups and professional cleanings.
If you’re thinking about brightening up your smile, one thing is for sure; there are many options available. LED is one that provides big results. It can be done at your home or in the dental office. Talk to your dental professional about what system is best for you.
